AUGUST 25TH, 2009

Summer made itself obvious today: third and fourth-grade visitors from the Police Athletic League braved the morning heat to plant and mulch at Rooftop Farms.  Our favorite morning activity?  Using chocolate bean shells donated by Mast Brothers Chocolate as a mulch around our tomato plants.  Applied in a thin layer and mixed well with our rocky soil, we’re hoping the chocolate will keep the weeds out, the moisture in, and the rich smell of 100% cacao in the air.  As the heat finally comes following two months of rain, our compost is starting to smell like…well, compost!–and it’s nice to have some candy smells around, too.
