SEPTEMBER 8TH, 2009

As the school year begins, out come the brown paper (and chic reusable) lunch bags.  But for those kids who eat hot lunches, enter Slow Foods.  Yesterday, they organized a cross-country call to action around the Child Nutrition Act, the legislation that governs the National School Lunch Program.  By making the language within the bill substantial, rather than fluff, we’re ensuring that school lunches are actually nutritious.  The full platform–which brings tears of joy to my eyes–can be found here. Growing Chefs did our part with a cooking demonstration in Brooklyn.  Whipping up a delicious sage pesto, we showed that a child-safe recipe (blenders!) can be sophisticated, nutritious (raw herbs and garlic), and easy to pack in a lunch bag.  Besides an excellent afternoon of eating well with friends and children, we had some amazing political action.  Over the course of the afternoon (organized by Michelle Grey Campion of The Epi-Cure), we were able to get fifty letters sent to Congress!
