FEBRUARY 25TH, 2010

In the winter, farmers hunker down and start planning for spring. Take off your mittens, get out the seed catalogues, and start planning your backyard, fire escape, kitchen window garden for New York City.

This two-session class will cover mapping out seasonal crops, sourcing & saving seeds, building best for your space, organic care & pest control, soil health, and small space troubleshooting.

For part two, learn how to turn your food scraps, coffee grounds and even dead fish into good dirt.  It’s a great way to start growing your free NYC garden. You do not have to have an outdoor growing space or garden to participate in this workshop.

We’ll discuss composting resources around New York City, how compost works, and what to do with your soil once you’ve got it. This class culminates in building an apartment-scale vermiculture (worm-based) composting system. You will walk away with a dozen new friends. They will be red wriggler worms, but (hopefully) also your classmates.
