For this farmer, it isn't truly summer until I eat my first summer fruits. Eggplants, peppers, and zucchini from Rooftop Farms were on the grill by mid-July, prepared by host & excellent chef Cody Utzman. This followed by a cornmeal crust apricot tart, drizzled in honey my housemate harvests from her rooftop apiary.More of Cody's artisanal cook-work can be tasted at The Standard (in Greenpoint, Brooklyn) as well as at Papacito's. As a long time local food-fan, I can tell you, this man knows how to treat vegetables right. If you're looking to grow your own summer produce, there's still time to transplant peppers and tomatoes, although be sure to give them lots of fruit-growing food (not heavy nitrogen feed) and compost. You may yet get an eggplant out there before the fall!
